A fork is one of the most common and powerful chess tactics. It occurs when one piece attacks two or more opponent pieces at the same time. The goal is to win material because the opponent can usually only save one of the attacked pieces. Knights are especially famous for their forking ability due to their unique L-shaped move, but any piece can perform a fork.
